Case Study — Property Inspection Software

Inspect-a-Home: A Field App That Writes the Report For You

Mont6 built the internal field-inspection app used by Inspect-a-Home's property inspectors nationwide — turning a property walkthrough into a structured, narrative-driven report that exports straight to PDF and Microsoft Word.

Project overview

Inspect-a-Home has been South Africa's leading property inspection company for over 41 years, operating through a nationwide network of independent franchise inspectors who carry out pre-purchase, pre-sale, new-build, and roof inspections for homeowners, buyers, developers, and estate agents.

Every inspection produces a detailed report on the condition of a property, room by room and defect by defect. Because the app is a working tool for trained inspectors rather than a consumer product, it's distributed directly to Inspect-a-Home's franchise network rather than through the public app stores — Mont6 built and continues to support it as custom business software, not a store-listed app.

The challenge

Property inspection reports carry real legal and financial weight — buyers, sellers, and agents rely on them, and the wording of a defect finding needs to be accurate, consistent, and defensible across every inspector in the network. Inspect-a-Home needed an app development partner who could build a mobile tool that:

Guides inspectors through a consistent checklist covering every part of a property, from the roof and stormwater down to plumbing, electrical, and each individual room. Lets inspectors select from a library of pre-approved narrative descriptions, so the wording of common defects stays consistent and correctly detailed across every franchise inspector. Attaches photo evidence to each finding on the spot, without juggling a separate camera roll or reference numbers. Turns a full walkthrough into a polished, ready-to-send report without hours of manual write-up back at the office.

Our solution

Mont6 designed and built a dedicated Android field app for Inspect-a-Home's inspectors, structured around the way a property inspection actually happens.

Inspectors work through a Selection screen listing every inspectable area of a property — roof external and internal, main superstructure, doors and windows, plumbing, electrical, gas installation, damp damage, each room, garage, staff accommodation, and more — then drill into a Component and Defect step for that area. Instead of typing findings from scratch, inspectors pick from a library of pre-written narrative descriptions covering common defects, each with the appropriate level of technical detail already worded correctly. Selecting a narrative automatically populates the report text, which the inspector can still edit, and attaches a photo captured directly in the app.

Once the walkthrough is complete, the app compiles every selected narrative and photo into a single structured report, exportable as a client-ready PDF or as an editable Microsoft Word document for cases that need further customisation. A Sync With Server function keeps every inspector's narrative library up to date centrally, so Inspect-a-Home's head office can refine report wording once and roll it out across the whole network.

Key features

Structured, area-by-area checklist

A guided Selection screen walks inspectors through every part of a property — roof, superstructure, plumbing, electrical, each room, garage, and more — so nothing gets missed.

Pre-written narrative library

Inspectors choose from a library of pre-approved defect descriptions with the correct technical wording built in, instead of writing free-text findings from scratch on site.

In-app photo capture per defect

Each selected defect can be backed by a photo captured directly in the app, keeping evidence attached to the right finding automatically.

Automatic report compilation

Every narrative and photo selected during the walkthrough is compiled into a single structured report — no manual write-up required back at the office.

PDF & Microsoft Word export

Finished reports export as a polished, client-ready PDF or as an editable Word document for inspectors who need to fine-tune the wording further.

Centralised narrative sync

A Sync With Server function keeps every inspector's narrative library current, so head office can update report wording once and roll it out across the whole network.
